Target Audience Theory

Target Audience Theory

Magazine 1:

KERRANG! Magazine has overall 40 adverts throughout their magazine.

There are 6 full pages of adverts and 7 pages which contain small adverts. Each page of small adverts roughly has around 4 adverts per page, each taking up about  1/4 of the page. Product advertising takes up 7 pages:

  • HMV ‘rock’ guitar hero.
  • HMV Slipknot DVD.
  • Limited edition KERRANG! T-shirt.
  • Ticket sales for the band ‘All Time Low’
  • The KERRANG! Tour.
  • The KERRANG! Request show for Sky and Virgin Media.
  • Battle for the sun Red vs Eaition.

Small adverts also take up 7 pages and are all music related and to do with Rock bands. This information includes:

  • CD releases
  • DVD releases
  • Tours
  • Music Videos

The 12 pages that are for the features in the KERRANG! magazine are also focused on rock bands, their upcoming events, tours and music releases, along with stories from the band members themselves.

However, there are only 2 full pages of TV Listings.

From the content research I have conducted I can tell from the information I have collected that the people that are reading this magazine are generally people who prefer the Rock genre of music because of the fact that this magazine is a Rock magazine, which has the latest information on Rock bands. The products in the advertisements that make me believe this magazine is for Rock lovers is products like the ‘HMV Rock guitar hero’ and the ‘HMV Slipknot DVD’

KERRANG! Magazines are normally around £2.20 which could be seen as quite cheap for a magazine. This could show that the disposable income of a consumer for this particular magazine isn't huge

Magazine 2:

The NME magazine has 32 adverts overall throughout their magazine.
There are around 16 pages of full page adverts and 7 pages taken up by small adverts. Each page of small adverts usually consist of 3 adverts per page, each taking up 1/3 of the page. Product advertising takes up only 4 pages and they consist of:
  •          Mask Company’s
  •          Band’s tour DVD’s
  •      The latest CD releases
  •     The latest DVD releases

·
The small adverts are also talking about the same things as product advertising, for example a particular band’s CD or latest T-Shirt range coming out. NME also have a space that is dedicated to The Editorial and Letter pages which are two pages combined.

However, compared to the KERRANG! Magazine, NME’s feature pages are focused on extended articles and are mainly text. Again unlike KERRANG! which has 2 pages of TV listings there are 4 pages of TV listings in NME.

From the content research I have conducted I can tell from the information that I have collected that the people reading this magazine would like the Indie genre of music because of the fact that this magazine is mainly focused on Indie musicians and bands. However, I also believe that these people will prefer to read a magazine then look at pictures because of the amount of text compared to KERRANG!

An NME magazine usually costs about £2.20 just like KERRANG! so I believe that, like the consumer of KERRANG!, the disposable income of NME’s consumers isn’t huge because of the fact that this magazine is also considered cheap.

I believe the Psychographics for both magazines would be ‘The Explorer’ because they are ‘young in nature’ and ‘are often the first to try out new experiences’ but also ‘The Aspirer’ because they could be seen as quite ‘Materialistic’

KERRANG! and NME Magazine Proportions

These pie charts show the evidence that I collected from both the NME and KERRANG! magazines in my content analysis research I did in class. Both pie charts allow me to easily see what is in music magazines and the proportions of the magazine contents.

Magazine Front Cover Layout

I annotated a magazine front cover to get myself familiar with media terminology and the layout and design of a front cover in order to help me when designing my own.

Mode Of Address - The Language Of Music Journalism

What is mode of address?

Mode of address is the language used in magazines. For example magazines can be informal or formal, this is normally decided by the target audience of the magazine. Not only does mode of address decide whether a piece of text is informal or formal, so does the use of colloquial or explicit language. This is normally decided through the genre of the music presented in the music magazine or the type of tone the writer wants to achieve.

Below I have looked at two different genres of music magazine and looked at both their modes of address:

Evaluation of Web Blogs

Name of Web log
Purpose and Intention of Web log
What differing media or ICT techniques (Video, Hyperlinks etc) are used?
How effectively does the Web log convey information and engage the consumer?
What areas from the Web log would you like to employ in your own?
Concrete Loop
Celebrating and sharing. Aimed at Black teenage Americans. Promotion of the Arts.
Embedded Youtube Videos. Links to other blogs. JPEG’s. Comment boxes. Hyperlinks. Different fonts, sizes and colours.
Concise Information.
Appropriate name for Target Audience. Range of ICT techniques.
Kimberley AS Media Foundation Portfolio
A creative way to show her thoughts and the process to her media product.
A zooming presentation editor. A slide hosting service. Hyperlinks. Playlist. JPEG’s.
It has short, concise, information that is relevant.
I would take the use of slide hosting services.
Harriet Wilde
For brides to be, looking for wedding footwear. For older women and adults.
Hyperlinks. Different font sizes. Quick links. JPEG’s.
Keeps the consumer up to date with news and upcoming events.
I would take the use of JPEG’s from this blog.
Movie Geek Blog
For film lovers who want news and opinions about the latest movie releases.
JPEG’s. Hyperlinks.
The images capture the consumer’s attention affectively.
I would take the use of JPEG’s but not the long sections of text.
Lovemydress.net/blog
Women who are interested in or looking to buy designer bridal wedding dresses.
Different fonts and sizes. JPEG’s. Interactive links. Hyperlinks. Links to other blogs.
Different fonts engage the consumer. The layout of the page also engages the consumer.
I would take the different use of fonts and the layouts from this blog.

This chart shows my research into 5 different blogs, because my coursework will be published on a blog to be assessed this research allows me to see what aspects of a blog I will use in my own. Each blog with the italic text have Hyperlinks have the ability to send the consumer to other blogs and  social network sites which help the consumer to interact with the blog in various different ways, I think this is a really good idea which I would like to use in my own blog. Also, I would like to use JPEG's and slide hosting services in my blog as I believe it gives the blog diversity. In addition, like in Concrete Loop's blog I want to only have concise information which is needed.

Integrating Images Onto Text

Here I am showing how I used InDesign to wrap text around an image. To create this I firstly saved the image of Marilyn Monroe from Google and opened it in PhotoShop. Once the image was opened in PhotoShop I used the quick selection tool to remove the image from its background, however the edges are sharp and jagged so if I was to use this technique in my magazine I would feather the image first. Saving the image as a JPEG I opened a new A4 document in InDesign. Using the text box tool I created 3 columns and pasted information about Marilyn Monroe that I found from the internet. Once I had my three columns set out I opened the image and placed it in the lower section of the middle column, although in my magazine I would make sure the columns were justified because I think it gives it a more professional look. Finally, I went to Window > Text wrap. This opened the text wrap box where I chose the 'wrap around object' shape setting which integrated the image of Marilyn onto the text, wrapping the text around Marilyn's body instead of a white square which is what I preferred.

Text Following A Path

In these two images I experimented using PhotoShop to create the look of text following a path. I chose two images from Google of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, saved them and opened them in PhotoShop. Once both images were open in PhotoShop I used the text on custom path tool to draw around each image where I wanted my text to go. Once the custom line had been created I typed a famous quote. This turns an average photo into something interesting. I really like the way text follows the image, I will think about ways I could incorporate this into my magazine.

Media Studies AS - Introduction

My name is Kelsie Rennick and I study Media Studies AS at Acland Burghley School.  I chose to study Media  Studies as an A-Level because:

  • It will help me to understand Media and what its effects are.
  • It will help me in a future Career of journalism which is something I would love to do.
  • Media is about film and advertising which is also something I would like to pursue as a Career.
  • Also, Media Studies will help me to improve my ICT skills.
The purpose of this blog is to update my classwork and other information linking to my course work throughout the year and for my teacher to be able to assess my ability to undertake and present appropriate research.

I like all different genres of music but the one I intend to focus on is Indie Rock.
